Rules: Trial of Position

The Trial of Position

Although not mandated as a necessity by League standards, Clan Teams are encouraged to conduct Trials of Position in some manner for new members of the Team. This will allow that new player to immerse himself more deeply in the Clan persona. The Trial of Position, in which a cadet attempts to test out of his or her Sibko, is the first official Trial that a Clan warrior faces in the FASA Universe. Trials fought prior to this are generally considered training episodes, and in most Clans are not recorded in a warrior's codex. (A true Clan warrior need not accept any challenge from a cadet, though most will hardly refuse, and rarely lose one.) In the FASA Universe, a Trial of Position may be required again at any time during a warrior's career whenever his or her ability to command is in question. In the Astral Dominion League however, Trials of Position for rank is not only NOT needed, but also not recommended, as it can sometimes lead to undesirables in positions of Command in a Team.

In the standard FASA Trial of Position, two Clan cadets face six experienced warriors with weapons at full power. Each cadet must take on three opponents, who attack one at a time. To attack an enemy out of Turn or to fire on another cadet's enemy promotes a melee in which all targets are legitimate. To become a Clan warrior, the cadet must defeat at least one opponent to achieve the Rank of Mechwarrior. Defeating two opponents brings with it the rank of Star Commander, defeating three, the rank of Star Captain. A few cadets have defeated four opponents in their Trial of Position, earning the rank of Star Colonel; this situation is extremely rare, however, because the second cadet must allow the Trial to become a melee.

A few FASA Clans have revised their Trials of Position to allow failed cadets a second chance at warrior status. These cadets repeat the Trial facing garrison-quality troops. Victory allows the cadet to join the garrison Galaxies. To see front-line duty, such a warrior must win a Trial of Position against regular troops. This new policy has yet to be challenged in the Grand Council, largely because it does not seem to violate the principles set down by Nicholas Kerensky. In the Astral Dominion League, Clan Teams may opt to allow a new player unlimited numbers of attempts to pass their Trial of Position, since this process is more of a “Role-playing” one. Team Leaders are permitted, however to restrict “cadets” from fighting in battles, until such time as they prove themselves.

For League play, a Trial of Position should normally take place between one Veteran Mechwarrior of the Clan, hereafter referred to as the Instructor, and one Sibko Cadet, using any of the “Combat” Missions available in Mechwarrior 4. The Instructor giving the Trial shall host the game server, and select all setting, and limitations for the match. The Cadet shall use any Custom or Stock Clan Mech up to a maximum of 90 tons in total weight. The Instructor shall use any custom or stock Clan Mech up to a maximum of 75 Tons, but always 15 tons lighter than that of the Cadet, unless there is not a light enough Mech available, in which case he will take as close to the 15 ton difference as possible. If the Cadet selects the lightest Mech Available in the game, then the Instructor shall use the same Mech weight as the Sibko Cadet. The Sibko Cadet shall have NO re-spawns, and the Instructor shall have three (3) re-spawns.

The Trial will commence the moment that the Instructor is no longer alone in the simulation. The Sibko Cadet must destroy the Instructor Once. Upon successfully destroying the Instructor once, the Cadet will be awarded the Rank of Mechwarrior. If the new Mechwarrior is capable of destroying the Instructor again on his second re-spawn, then the Cadet shall be awarded the Rank of Star Commander. If the cadet proves to be exceptional, and destroys the Instructor on his Third re-spawn, then he shall be awarded the Rank of Star Captain. The Trial ends automatically upon the destruction of the Cadet, or the third destruction of the Instructor. It should be noted that this is by no means an easy test, and there is no shame in not succeeding the first or even the second time. If a Team Leader deems that they indeed have sufficient players online to conduct the Trial of Position according to the “FASA authentic” version, they are welcome to do so.
